25 | On 6/7/23 Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Monica Mathur conducted an unannounced Required Inspection at Old Firehouse School Walnut Creek. LPA met with Director, Judy Haus and explained the purpose of today's inspection. Facility's operating days/hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5:30pm in 3 Rooms - Yellow, Lavender, Fire Truck. Facility is located in the premises of Mt. Diablo Unitarian Church.
The physical plant was inspected, and LPA toured the premises with the Director.
INDOOR SPACE: 31 children were outside in the play yard with 4 fully qualified staff and 1 prospective hire. Director stated she was on "work interview" for 3 hours today and supervised by qualified staff. There were 7 children in Fire Truck room with 1 fully qualified staff. Facility was in compliance with teacher child ratios during inspection. Classrooms and restroom were inspected. Facility follows a Continuity of Care model with Emergent Learning style of teaching. Children were engaged in various activities under the visual supervision of the teachers. Disinfectants, cleaning solutions, and other items dangerous to the health and safety of children were stored in places inaccessible to them. Cabinets, drawers, and rooms used for storage were locked. Furniture and equipment were age appropriate and in good condition, free of sharp, loose, or pointed parts. Restroom for children was observed to be in safe, sanitary, and functioning condition. Floors were clean and free from tripping hazard. Foods and beverages were stored safely. Facility provides AM/PM snack and children bring their own lunch. Trash cans for solid waste had tight-fitting covers on and were in good repair. LPA observed a working Fire extinguisher, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Log shows that the last Fire Drill was conducted on May 17, 2023. Facility does not provide transportation for children, but Director understands that children cannot be left alone, unattended in parked vehicles. Required postings were observed to be posted. Facility has completed mandatory Water Lead Testing before January 2023.
OUTDOOR SPACE was inspected and observed to be fenced and safe. There are 2 separate play areas divided by a low fence. Play equipment was maintained in good condition and free of hazards. Areas around and under high climbing equipment were cushioned with material that absorbs falls. Shade is provided and there were no bodies of water observed. Drinking water is readily available to children. |
