25 | On August 24, 2023, Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Miguel Herrera and Licensing Program Manager (LPM) Juvenal Moctezuma conducted an unannounced case management inspection and met with Co-Director Jessica Phengsiri. A tour of the facility was taken inside out, and census information was obtained. There is 36 preschool children present at the facility, capacity as specified on the license is being maintained. The purpose of this inspection was to inspect the facility’s new outdoor play structure.
The outdoor activity area size was not modified, and the outdoor activity area is approximately 22,500 square feet. LPAs observed sufficient natural shade provided by trees. LPAs also observed canopies installed throughout the outdoor activity area. The canopy between the “Purple” Classroom and the Administrative Office had a missing stake anchored to the ground. The area around the swings has adequate wood chips to absorb falls and has an appropriate shade structure. LPAs recommends Director Estefana to install cushions on the shade structure’s poles as best practice to mitigate children getting injured. LPAs also recommends Director Estefana to trim the low hanging canopy of the small tree located by the swing area to provide safe clearance for the children and to not impede supervision.
While conducting an inspection around the garden area LPAs noticed a water table that is being used as a water station to fill the children’s garden watering cans. LPAs advised Director Estefana to have staff supervise children during water activities. LPAs recommend that water is safely disposed after outside playtime since staff indicated that it gets left there throughout the day.
The new play structure has a manufacturer label that states the equipment is designed for children ages 2 to 12 years old which is appropriate for the preschool children. LPAs observed adequate cushioning in the form of wood chips underneath the play structure and landing of the slides to absorb falls. LPAs observed a metal bridge structure by the outdoor play structure that is rusting. LPAs advised Director Estefana to paint the metal bridge structure to limit further rusting.
