25 | LPA Kevin O'Connell made an unannounced Case Management inspection regarding an Unusual Incident that occurred on 1/15/2020 where there was a gas explosion on the premises. The center is located on the premises of the First Presbyterian Church. A loud "boom" was heard at the preschool and the at the neighboring church. Loud noises are common around this downtown location. A church volunteer went into the gym kitchen to investigate and smelled natural gas, notified church staff who called the fire department. The gym kitchen is located near the outdoor play area behind a locked door. There were no children playing outside when this incident occurred. The church administrator, Lisa, immediately notified the teachers on site and instructed them to vacate. The Director drove up at that point and helped organize the children in the parking lot across the street from the facility. It was very cold so a teacher walked next door to a neighboring United Methodist Church and asked if they could assemble in a warm room and they did accommodate the 25 children and 5 teachers. Shortly after that the Church administrator, Lisa, told Director, Jennifer what the findings of the fire department were.
Director Jennifer and the teachers all called parents to pick up as they would close the facility until cleared for use. All children were picked up and children returned to care the next day, 1/16/2020.
The fire department figured that the burner with a faulty/ not working pilot light had let gas escape and had ignited by a pilot light on the burner next to it. The gas was turned off to 2 faulty burners and will be repaired as soon as the repair company can attend to it. The stove, 4 of the 6 burners are working safely at this point.
No deficiencies were cited today.
