32 | To do this, our teachers are trained to use various techniques including redirection, praise, and distraction.
Examples of previous incidents/experiences with children and how they were addressed/resolved were described. Child(ren) climbing on classroom furniture, hitting other children, and throwing toys or other items in the classroom, are some previous issues that the staff/teachers have dealt with. In these situations, staff/teachers have discussed safety in the classroom, safe hands to not hurt their friends/classmates, and redirection by providing the option of a toy or activity. Other, more serious incidents, not described, that the facility has experienced have resulted in contacting parent/legal guardians and child(ren) being picked up early from care.
As part of Positive guidance, praise is verbally given followed by the option of choosing an item from the classrooms’ treasure box which is filled with toys, stickers, playdough, and other items for children to place with.
It also states: In accordance with our (KinderCare) policy and licensing regulations, our staff never uses corporal punishment.
