Application Specialist (AS) Alecia Sifuentes and Licensing Program Manager (LPM) Bettina Engelman met with Applicant, Jennifer Johnson for the purpose of a site visit to pre-measure the classrooms, outdoor playground, and potential indoor playground. Applicant is requesting a preschool license to serve 105 preschool children from age three to entry into kindergarten. The program will operate Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. AS has not received a granted fire clearance for the facility.

AS and LPM observed the children and staff restrooms. LPM informed the Applicant that the children's restrooms must be separate from the staff and gymnastics business. Applicant stated the facility plans to install a total of 7 toilets and 7 sinks.

AS was unable to measure the outdoor area due to no outdoor playground being present on the property. Applicant stated they have been approved by the city to build an outdoor area. AS and LPM observed that the potential outdoor area will be located on the right side of the building which is currently being used as additional parking. Applicant stated they will be installing curbing, seven foot tall fencing, and two evacuation doors. Applicant stated they hope to start construction soon.

AS measured three classrooms. Classroom #1 contains a total of 924.33 square feet, which will accommodate 26 preschool children. Classroom #2 contains a total of 1,068.15 square feet, which will accommodate 30 preschool children. AS observed a gate in Classroom #3. Applicant stated the gate will be used to section off the classroom in order to create a walkway for families and staff to use. Applicant is unsure of whether they would like to keep the gate or remove it in order to have more classroom space.

Report continues on LIC809-C.

AS provided Applicant with two Classroom #3 measurements with and without the gate. AS measured Classroom #3 without the gate and the classroom contains a total of 2196.70 square feet, which will accommodate 62 preschool children. AS measured Classroom #3 again with the gate in place and the classroom contains a total of 1,711.05 square feet, which will accommodate 48 preschool children.

AS did not measure the indoor playgrounds due to the area being specially used for the gymnastics business. LPM suggested to Applicant that they can divide the space in Classroom #3 in order to create an indoor playground for the preschool program. Applicant will follow up with specific use of Classroom #3 and licensing management will consult on the minimum space needs of the indoor play space to determine total capacity.

This facility evaluation report was emailed to Applicant. Applicant was encouraged to the visit the Department's website at WWW.CDSS.CA.GOV for information regarding child care updates, forms, regulations and legislation pertaining to child care centers.
