On 6/14/2023 Licensing Program Analysts (LPA) Judy Laureano and Sarah Garcia conducted an unannounced Annual Required Inspection at 601 Latimer Road, Santa Monica, CA 90402 and was greeted by Lead Teacher Alexys Buckner and discussed the purpose of the visit.

At approximately 10:35 a.m. Eve Pontius, facility director arrived at facility.

LPAs toured the facility both indoors and outdoors and observed the following: 4 children and 2 staff members. LPAs observed facility getting ready for the end of the year celebration.

Facility will be closing at the end of the school year, last day of operation is Friday, June 23, 2023. LPAs reminded facility to make sure that a closure statement is sent to LPA with facility’s license to process the closure. Facility operates Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Facility is licensed to serve 17 preschool children.

There is no swimming pool or other bodies of water on the premises. There are no firearms or ammunition allowed or stored on the premises.

Currently facility does not have any child that needs medications.

Teachers do the day to day cleaning in the classroom and facility. Disinfectants, cleaning solutions and other hazardous items are made inaccessible in the top shelf of the bathroom.

Furniture and equipment are in good condition, free of sharp, loose or pointed parts. Playground equipment is in safe condition, free of sharp, loose or pointed parts. The surface of the outdoor activity space is maintained in a safe condition and is free of hazards.

All toilets and hand washing facilities are in safe and sanitary operating condition. Floors in the facility are clean and safe. All kitchen, food preparation and storage areas are clean, free of litter/rubbish and free of rodents/vermin.

Parents provide meals and snacks, facility does not provide meal meals through the schools. Solid waste storage containers have tight-fitting covers and are in good repair.

Water is available both indoors and outdoors. LPAs observed a water dispenser in the classroom.

Areas around high climbing equipment have cushioning material to absorb falls. LPAs observed a sand area outside. The facility is free of flies, insects and rodents. Facility contracts with a Pest control vendor to ensure that facility stays pest free. LPAs observed working fire extinguisher in the classroom.

Prior to working or volunteering in a licensed childcare facility, all individuals subject to a criminal record review have received a criminal record clearance or exemption. Upon notification from the Department, the licensee will comply and act immediately to terminate the employment of, remove from the facility or bar from entering the facility for any person it is deemed necessary while the Department considers granting or denying an exemption. Capacity and limitations as specified on the license are being maintained.

At least one person trained in CPR and Pediatric First Aid is present when children are at the facility or at off site activities. Lead Teacher’s CPR and First Aid certification was taken on 10/11/2022. LPA observed lead teacher’s file to be complete. LPAs reviewed a sample of children’s files and observed 4 files were complete.

The name of the child care center director or fully-qualified teacher(s) designated to act in the director’s absence has been reported to the Department. The person who signs the child in/out of the facility shall use their full legal signature and record the time of day. LPA observed sign in/out sheets outside the facility.

All children are under supervision, including visual supervision, of a teacher at all times. Facility maintains a ratio of one teacher supervising no more than 12 children in care.

To improve the quality and value of the new inspection process, a survey will be sent to the email address provided. Please complete the survey and share your inspection experience. Facility representative was reminded that all adults 18 and over, including employees and volunteers, must obtain a criminal record clearance or exemption, or transfer their existing clearance or exemption, prior to initial presence in a Child Care Center. A civil penalty of $100.00 minimum/day up to $500.00 maximum per day/per person will be assessed if this regulation is violated.

LPA and director discussed the Community Care Licensing website www.ccld.ca.gov which will provide access to Provider Information Notices (PINs), Quarterly Updates, COVID-19 Information and Resources, Mandated Reporter Training, Safe Sleep in Child Care, Lead Poisoning Facts, Forms and Regulations.

A notice of site visit was given and must remain posted for 30 days. Failure to comply with posting requirements shall result in an immediate civil penalty of $100. Exit interview conducted and report was reviewed with Eve Pontius, facility director.
