32 | The classroom furniture and equipment were inspected for good repair, free of sharp, loose, or pointed parts. All indoor classrooms were inspected to ensure that the floors have a surface that is safe and clean. All materials and surfaces accessible to children are toxic free.
The Outdoor playground equipment is in safe condition, free of sharp, loose or pointed parts. The surface of the outdoor activity space is maintained in a safe condition and is free of hazards. All areas around or under high climbing equipment, swings, slides, and similar equipment are cushioned with material that absorbs a fall. There is adequate shade in the play yard. LPA did observe a large storage shed that houses materials, supplies and other items for the facility. Per Director, this area is inaccessible to children in care. However, LPA did observe the door to be open and accessible to children in care. LPA did inspect the storage shed and observed gardening tools that could pose a danger to children in care. LPA did observe the shed door to have chain lock. The chain was hanging with nothing to lock it with. Per Director, the facility was recently painted, and the painters removed the hardware that the chain is supposed to connect to, to lock the door. LPA explained to the director that the hardware needs to be added to prevent children from gaining access to the shed. LPA observed one of the staff members add the hardware and the storage shed locked preventing children from having access. LPA also observed a sealed bucket that appeared to be paint in an accessible area of the play yard to children in care. Per director, the bucket is empty. LPA observed the bucket to be thrown out in the trash. LPA advised the director that thorough walk throughs of the facility should be conducted daily to ensure that these types of materials are not accessible to children during operational hours.
At this time, the Director’s office is used as an isolation area. Parents are contacted immediately. There is also a mat available if needed.
The facility only provides snacks for children in care. The children bring lunch from home. LPA reminded Director, food that is brought from home must be labeled with the child’s name and stored properly or refrigerated. There is a kitchen on site. The kitchen area was observed to be clean, and the cleaning compounds/solutions were found to be away from the food. Storage areas are clean, free of litter, rubbish, and rodents/vermin. All storage containers for solid waste, including moveable bins, have tight fitting covers and are in good repair.
