On 06/25/2024 at 9:30 am, Licensing Program Analyst (LPA), Crystal Green conducted an unannounced Case Management inspection for an increase in capacity. LPA met with Facility Representative Gabriela Dominguez and Zafira Firdosy. This facility is currently licensed as a preschool program with a capacity of 62 children serving ages 2 to 6 years old in (3) classrooms: Firefly’s, Lady Bugs, and Busy Bees. The Licensee, K-Step Montessori Inc., has requested to increase the preschool capacity by closing the existing school age license (198011042) operating with a capacity of 20 in the Butterfly classroom and adding it to the existing preschool licensed areas for a total new capacity of 82 preschool children that will be operating out of (4) classrooms: Firefly’s, Lady Bugs, Busy Bees, and the Butterflies. There is also an infant program on site license (198011043).

Hours of operation will be Monday to Friday from 7am to 6 pm. Present during today’s inspection were 42 children with 7 staff. Appropriate ratios and supervision were observed. All indoor and outdoor activity space utilized for the children was inspected today. LPA informed Gabriela Dominguez that staff are required to maintain direct visual supervision of the children at all times during indoor and outdoor activities.

LPA continued to tour the facility and measured new indoor activity space. Total new indoor activity space measured 2,881.93 square footage, which is sufficient to accommodate the requested increase of capacity. LPA observed all indoor activity space to be complete with safe, age-appropriate furniture and equipment, including tables, chairs, cubbies, napping cots, bookshelves, and other activity supplies for the children. Drinking water is available in the classrooms via water fountains located within the Lady Bugs, Busy Bees, and Butterflies. LPA observed all hazardous items to be inaccessible to children. There are no bodies of water or weapons on the property. Fire clearance was granted on 5/30/2024. LPA observed a total of 8 sinks and 8 toilets available for children’s use. These are sufficient to accommodate the requested capacity of 82 children.

The facility currently has a (2) fully fenced playground areas: Play yard #1 for the Infant Program and Play yard #2 designated for the Preschool Program. Fencing is made of brick which was observed to be at least four feet high. The total square footage for Play yard #1 (Infant yard) is 2,432.46 square footage, which can only accommodate 32 children at one time. The total square footage for Play yard #2 (Preschool yard) is 3,453.36 square footage, which can only accommodate 46 children at one time, insufficient for the number of children being requested. A playground waiver to share the playground at different times in the AM and PM due to limited square footage shall be submitted and approved prior to licensure. The licensee will also be requesting to allow children enrolled in the Fireflies and Lady Bugs classroom to share usage of Play yard #1 with the Infant program using a staggered play schedule.

Shade is provided via fixed shade structure. There are sufficient outdoor age-appropriate toys and play equipment available on the playground. Drinking water is available via water fountain and child’s personal water bottles. LPA observed all hazardous items on the playground to be inaccessible to children. Facility Representative was reminded that any changes to the facility must be reported to and approved by Community Care Licensing.

During this inspection, LPA obtained a waiver request letter and pictures of the outdoor play area. The Facility Representative, Gabriela Dominguez, was informed that the waiver requests will be reviewed by the Regional Office for final approval in order to obtain the capacity of 82 preschool children.

No corrections are needed. Upon a final file review and approval of the outdoor waiver request, a license for 82 children will be granted.

Exit interview conducted and report was reviewed with the Facility Representative, Gabriela Dominguez and Zafira Firdosy.
