25 | At 8:55am on 1/17/2025, Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) Matthew Gallo met with facility representative Paolo Sarmiento to deliver findings of a complaint investigation. Upon arrival, LPA observed a census of 13 children supervised by 3 staff. 5 more children arrived later in the visit, bringing the total census of the day to 18 children supervised by 3 staff.
Through the course of the above mentioned investigation, LPA determined that a separate deficiency regarding staff qualifications occurred. Facility records and and staff interviews detail a November 1st, 2024 incident in which a child was injured by another child on the playground. Staff interviews provide corroborating accounts of the two staff present on the playground at the time of the injury, both of which were aides. According to accounts, no qualified teacher was present with the aides, who are unqualified to supervise children without the presence of a teacher.
During the present visit, LPA observed an additional deficiency. After arrival at the facility for today's inspection, LPA subsequently visited Sterling & Bambini Montessori located at 801 Sterling Parkway before returning to the facility at approximately 10:00am. By this time, the census had increased to 18 children supervised by 3 staff. At approximately 10:30am all 18 children were outside in the outdoor play yard when Staff Member 1 (S1), a qualified teacher, took their scheduled break. This left the 18 children with the remaining two staff members, Staff Member 2 (S2) and Staff Member 3 (S3). Through interview and record review, LPA determined that S2 was a qualified teacher and S3 was an aide with no ECE units. S1's break lasted for approximately 10 minutes before they rejoined the outside class. During this ten minute period, the facility was operating out of required teacher-child ratio.
