32 | The complaint investigation was conducted by special task force within the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department and Community Care Licensing Investigation Bureau (IB), Investigator, Shawniece Poinsette. The investigation consisted of interviews with facility staff, children’s parents, day care children themselves and other relevant agencies. IB investigator, Poinsette also reviewed medical records, video footage and other documents received during the investigation.
On March 19, 2025 the Palmdale Child Care Regional Office of Community Care Licensing (RO) received a complaint regarding allegations of neglect/ lack of care pertaining to daycare children while in care of La Petite Academy regarding the above allegation.
The investigation revealed during the hours of operation preschool children were exposed to pills-later determined to be fentanyl drug pills. The incident occurred during circle activity time with the children.
During the investigation, it was determined that these pills packaged in a white baggie, fell out of a child’s pocket, which he brought into the center. The location of the incident was in an open area where the provider had constant visuals without any obstruction of the children. As soon as the pills were exposed, the teacher immediately noticed. Without hesitation, she questioned the children surrounding the pills and retrieved all the pills from the floor. The teacher followed protocol with storing hazard material and notifying the director and parents timely.
Based on multiple agencies investigations, confidential interviews, record review, and video footage this rare occurrence of incident is concluded, no fault regarding the center as this was merely an accident stemming from neglect of a parent within their home.
All protocols and training were followed and performed without further action; therefore, the allegations of neglect/lack of care are deemed unsubstantiated at this time.
An exit interview was conducted, a copy of this report and appeal rights were reviewed with Director Samantha Brown. Notice of Site Visit was given and must remain posted for 30 days. Failure to maintain posting as required will result in a civil penalty of $100.00. |
