32 | It is alleged that the involved incidents were done with a “malicious intent." It was reported that on 04/07/2020 (approximately), a child was trying to take a nap, when a staff member poked their eyes. The child’s representative reported the incident to Director Juliana Tahan. Director met with the staff member in question and the staff member admitted to touching the child’s eyes softly, attempting to soothe the child to sleep.
Then on Friday, 04/17/2020, the child’s authorized representative arrived at the facility for afternoon pick up. Assistant Director Jenny McClanahan walked the child out of the facility and the child’s representative noticed stains on the back of the child’s t-shirt. The child’s representative asked the child what happened, and the child disclosed that during naptime, he/she was laying down and a staff member walked by and intentionally sprayed an “unknown liquid” on the child. The unknown liquid caused discoloration to the child’s t-shirt.
LPA interviewed involved individuals and it was disclosed that during nap time a staff member was supervising 10 preschool children. The staff member began cleaning the classroom and noticed one child was having difficulty napping. The staff directed the child to sit in the Library Area so that he/she would not disturb other napping children. The child relocated to the directed area and the staff member continued cleaning the classroom. The staff member noticed the red sanitizer spray bottle was low on solution, so they retrieved a new red spray bottle from the facility kitchen. The staff member began spraying the Science Area, then continued spraying other commonly touched surfaces. Once the staff member sprayed the surfaces, he/she used paper towels to wipe down the sprayed areas. The child was playing in the Library Area while the staff member sprayed and wiped down the classroom. According to interviews, the red labeled bottle grabbed from the kitchen sink was labeled “ClickSan Disinfectant/Sanitizer”.
During LPA’s tele-inspection on 04/23/2020, LPA observed one blue labeled “Glass & Multi-Surface Cleaner” spray bottle and one red labeled “ClickSan Disinfectant/Sanitizer” spray bottle being stored under the classroom cabinet. According to interviews conducted, the two bottles identified above are the only spray bottles kept in the classroom and used daily by staff members. Per interviews with involved individuals, the bottles that are stored under the classroom cabinet, do not contain bleach. LPA Hogue was unable to test the spray bottles used the day the incident occurred.
The evidence gathered throughout this investigation reveals that a staff member was monitoring children and utilized their downtime to clean the classroom. The staff member realized the bottle they were using was empty, and they went inside the facility kitchen to retrieve a new bottle. According to interview disclosures, the staff member grabbed a red labeled “ClickSan Disinfectant/Sanitizer” bottle which doesn’t contain bleach. The |
