32 | Center director reported perhaps the complaint was submitted by guardians who believed there was a lack of supervision which resulted in their children getting injured. However, center director reported those incidents had been clarified and staff had been reminded to engage with the children to provide adequate supervision. Staff reported, each of their classrooms adhere to the 1 teacher to 12 children regulation, but that’s only when all the children enrolled are present at the same time which doesn’t happen frequently as some kids are part time children. Staff also added, supervision of all children is ensured by splitting the children into groups, with staff responsible over one group at a time. Some staff reported previously the center used to combine all three classrooms, which may have appeared as if the center was out of ratio for the amount children to staff present, but the center stopped combining the classrooms a few months prior. Staff reported when the center did combine classrooms it could also appear as if there wasn’t sufficient supervision. Other staff reported they have observed staff on their cellphones, but couldn’t confirm if it was an emergency or to look something up. Either way, when that occurred it did appear as if staff was not providing supervision over children for being on their cellphone. All staff corroborated the center provides meals to the children, and when the children are hungry and ask for seconds, there is enough food to give them more. When children are picky and don’t want the meal provided then children are given extra snacks, or something they did like. And guardians are notified if a child isn’t eating or interested in the meals available through the center.
Guardian interviews revealed, some guardians were concerned with the number of staff to the number of children present which may lead to a lack of supervision, which then can result in children getting injured or incidents occurring with children. Most guardians reported they had seen 2 staff in their children’s classrooms, when they believed the center would follow a 3 staff per classroom ratio. Some guardians reported they believed the center was adhering to the ratio requirements, and one guardian reported they believed staff can’t supervise all children all the time. Guardians corroborated the center does provide meals, however, most guardians expressed concern their children are “picky” eaters and are usually hungry when they are picked up from the center since they did not eat the meal that was provided. Some guardians reported they packed snacks and extra food for their children to eat, however sometimes those meals were returned as well, which guardians interpreted as their children had not eaten sufficiently.
Most children interviewed were able to name both teachers in their classrooms. One child reported staff play with children when its outdoor play time. Two children reported, staff watch over the children while they play outside. Another child reported staff stand on the concrete walls outside while the children play. Most children reported they eat the meals the center provides, and when they want more they ask for more food. Some children reported if they don’t like the meal that was provided they leave it there and won’t eat it. |
