25 | On 03/23/23 Licensing Program Analysts (LPA), Araceli Gibson and Denisia Jimenez conducted an unannounced case management inspection. LPAs met with Judy Huerta. LPA’s toured of the facility and took a census of 22 children present in the Preschool. LPA stated the reason for the inspection was to follow up on an incident that was reported to CCL on 03/09/23.
Child 1 and Child 2 were playing with water marbles put them in their mouths and stated they ingested them while under supervision of staff 1. Director immediately called poison control and school nurse and followed the guidance provided to them. Parents were notified of the incident and the children were picked up. Parents were urged to take the children to the emergency room for a health evaluation. Parents of Child 1 and Child 2 complied with the request. Child 1 and Child 2 had an X-ray done and were asked to monitor for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, acting out of character, refusal to eat or change in bowels. Children returned to school the next day with no symptoms.
Director and school nurse furthered their own research, which lead to monitoring the children by means of follow up during the day, evenings and weekends over the days that followed. Director also took a sample of the water marbles home and put them in water to test how they expanded. Water marbles expanding to the size of a nickel can be harmful to young children. Director decided to remove water marbles from their facilities through out Turlock Unified School District. LPA Gibson obtained the unusual incident report at this visit.
The facility was providing adequate measures of supervision during the incident, notified authorized representatives, and properly documented the incident with Community Care Licensing.
